| This work is the result of collaboration between the English, French, Channel Isles and Belgian laboratories which are involved in a study of the English Channel. Its subject is the activities of fleets and fleet interactions, and it complements other work on the biogeographical identification of Channel fish and shellfish stocks (published), and on modelling the fleets' interactions as they exploit the resources (in preparation). The concept of a métier is defined as being the use of one fishing gear to catch one or several species targeted during a particular season in a given area. | INTRODUCTION: The Dover Strait (Figure 1) connects the North Sea to the English Channel. Here, northern France and South-East England are at their closest. This narrow corridor, one of the world's busiest straits for maritime shipping, is a key economic area for numerous activities, such as leisure and tourism, international ports and shipping, plus the exploitation of living or abiotic marine resources. | La souille expérimentale de Baie de Seine, dite "souille CNEXO", a été creusée de 1974 à 1980-81. Elle se compose de deux entités : au Nord-Est, une partie dite "souille ancienne", peu profonde, creusée dès 1974, et au Sud-Ouest, une partie dite "souille récente", plus profonde, creusée après 1977. Quinze ans environ après l'arrêt des extractions, la souille ne s'est que faiblement comblée. La principale évolution s'observe au niveau des talus, où des phénomènes de glissement se produisent. On constate un dépôt de sable envasé, plus marqué dans la partie ancienne de la souille que dans la partie plus récente et plus profonde. |

| This study, carried out from 1995 to 1997, within the framework of "Le Havre" harbour extension project, concerned halieutic populations and the characterization of a coastal nursery in the oriental part of the Seine bay and the Seine estuary . The main objective was to describe the specific and demographic composition of marine populations and their spatio-temporal distribution, and so assess the biological and halieutic role of this area. This study also included a research about the dietary needs of fish juveniles living in the estuary. | At this moment, the quasi-totality of the catches of the 95 licensed or French trawlers fishing on the shelf of French Guyana is thrown overboard, except for shrimps. This waste, which has been going on for 20 years in French Guyana, is the consequence a very specific production system which has just been the focus of a study by some French scientists who assessed it and tried to provide some solutions. It appears that the use of these neglected resources can be made at three different levels: 1) by making the boats keep the totality of the species they already partially keep, 2) by making them keep a series of complementary species which can be sold directly as raw fish products, 3) by collecting the leftovers for the making of sub-products or flour. |
